Self Culture
"The best part of every man's education is that which he gives to himself"
- Sir Walter Scott
Self culture has been a marked feature in the character of many individuals and nations. We have instances of many who have distinguished themselves beyond others, who have commanded respect and homage. Their industry, sobriety and upright honesty unconsciously pass into the lives of others. Many people are not aware of the daily life educations given in our homes, in thee streets, in the workshops and so on.
In the pursuit of individual excellence, the common qualities are found most useful, such as common sense intensified. John Foster held genius to be the power of lighting one's own fire, or as the power of making efforts. The extraordinary results, effected by dint of sheer industry and perseverance, have led many distinguished men to doubt whether the gift of genius was as exceptional an endowment as it is usually supposed to be. Most distinguished inventors, artists, thinkers, and workers of all kinds owe their success, in a great measure to their indefatigable industry and application. They were men who turned things gold. However, Great results can not be achieved at once. We must sow before we can reap.
The chief object of culture is not merely to fill the mind with the other man's thought through books, by making him the passive recipient of others impression. Culture calls for the enlargement of individual intelligence, to make men useful and efficient in in their particular spheres of life. The object of knowledge should be to mature in wisdom and improve character. This will make us better, happier and more useful.
The battle of life in most cases is fought uphill. To win without struggle, is to win without honour. If there were no difficulties, there would be no success. If there is nothing to struggle for, there would be nothing to be achieved. Difficulties must be mastered, if a man wishes to reach the summit of success in self culture.
Just remember, the great and the greatest were men, women, and humans like us, what they could achieve we too can. What all is needed is unconquerable will power, optimism and dedicated effort. We just need to push ourselves and ask only one question to ourselves, " If they can, Why not You?"
